Ideas for Celebrating Women's History Month Virtually

Women have always been crucial to global history, but people overlooked their impact throughout generations. Texts capturing early human history often excluded this fabulous gender, apart from influential personalities like queens.

Historians (almost entirely males) often viewed past events via the lens of the "great man" concept, which holds that male heroes' struggles shaped past events. But things changed in the 20th century, which saw the inclusion of women's history as an educational discipline and the elimination of gender barriers that denied them access to learning institutions.

Nowadays, we acknowledge the efforts of history-making ladies during Women's History Month. Even better, there are no geographical impediments, and you can celebrate the day with your favorite women virtually.

How Was Women's History Month Born?

As recently as the 70s, women's history was virtually unknown in the general public consciousness and the K-12 curriculum. So, the Education Task Force of California's Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women came up with a new celebration to address this in 1978, known as the Women's History Week.

The event organizers picked the week after March 8 to match International Women's Day. This movement gained popularity rapidly across the country, and other communities came up with their celebrations the year after.

The origins of Women's History Month celebrations date back to 1981 when Pub. L. 97-28 was passed. Congress sanctioned and requested the President to decree the week starting from March 7 the following year as Women's History Week.

Later on, the National Women's History Project signed a petition, leading Congress to pass Pub. L. 100-9. This law designated March 1987 as the first Women's History Month. Additional resolutions were also passed between 1988 and 1994 to request and authorize the President to proclaim every March as Women's History Month.

The celebrations are now a culture in the US, and every state observes them in honor of the immense accomplishments made by women to our society and culture. From politics to science, Women's History Month is an opportunity to reflect on and cherish the trailblazing women who paved the way for change.

Fortunately, you can celebrate the big day alongside your loved ones in different ways despite your current location, including virtually.
